IndiGo Joins Sensex: Will the Rally in This Aviation Giant Continue?
IndiGo's parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, has seen its share price rise by around 2% following the announcement that it will be included in the BSE Sensex from December 22, 2025. This inclusion means IndiGo will replace Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles in the 30-stock benchmark index, reflecting its growing market presence. The company's shares have gained nearly 28% year-to-date in 2025, significantly outperforming the broader Sensex index, which gained over 8.5% in the same period.
The Sensex inclusion is a major milestone for IndiGo, marking the first aviation company to join the index in years and signaling confidence in the sector’s growth and financial maturity. InterGlobe Aviation reported strong operational performance recently, with a 9.3% rise in revenue from operations and a 10.4% increase in total income. Passenger numbers grew 3.6% to 28.8 million, while yield per passenger improved by 3.2%, maintaining a steady load factor of 82.5%.
Analysts see the index inclusion as positive for IndiGo, describing it as a long-term growth story supported by market leadership and robust fundamentals. However, they also caution that aviation stocks traditionally face challenges, and significant gains would depend on margin improvements and cost stability. This change is expected to attract increased attention from index funds and global investors, broaden sectoral representation in the Sensex, and may ultimately lead to IndiGo’s inclusion in prominent global indices aligned with strong capacity growth and international route expansion.
Key market details:
Market cap: ₹2.27 lakh crore
Standalone P/E Ratio: ~45
6-month stock gain: 9%
2025 YTD gain: Over 28%
Scheduled Sensex inclusion: December 22, 2025
This development comes amidst a reshuffling where Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles exited the index following its recent corporate demerger, making way for IndiGo’s entry. As India’s largest airline, IndiGo’s inclusion is also seen as a boost to the aviation sector's profile in India’s equity markets.
